How to tell if the addict wants help. How to help an addict decide to seek help.

tunnelvision.jpg True or False? The Addict Is Not Ready to Stop Using Drugs...

"Sam is not ready to stop using drugs," says Mom, "He went to a rehab and left before completing the program. Now he is using again. He is just not ready to quit drugs."

That may prove to be true in the end but before such a conclusive judgment is made, there is a very important fact that cannot be overlooked: To his credit, Sam went to a rehab program.

A major indication that the addict does want help is that they have gone to rehab—and in some cases several times. That they failed is not a sure sign that they were not ready to stop using. A very important question to ask is: What was the program that the addict went to?

Not all Addiction treatment is the same. There are many different types of Drug rehabilitation programs. These different programs have different methods, lengths and consequently, different results and success rates.

A drug addict may go to five or even ten programs and still they might fail. Does that mean that the addict is not ready to stop using drugs? No. It is more likely that the addict has not found a proper program which truly addresses the causes of Relapse.

The most frustrating consequence of failed rehab programs is the loss of hope for the addict and the family and the conviction of the addict that he or she is destined to continue a life of drug use so why bother trying. Even if a good program is finally found, the addict has come to such a low, that they have lost all confidence in anyone proclaiming that they can help. At that point they can be almost completely beyond reach.

If you are searching for a rehabilitation program for a loved one, be thorough. Ask a lot of questions. Remember that not all programs are the same. Focus on results. Ask how results are obtained and about the success rate.
