According to the 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 119
million Americans (50.1% of the population) aged 12 or older were
current drinkers of alcohol on 2003. About 54 million (22.6%)
participated in “Binge drinking” at least once in the 30 days prior to
the survey and 16.1 million (6.8%) were heavy drinkers. “Binge
drinking” is five or more drinks in a row. These figures were
similar to the 2002 figures.Alcohol related crashes are also the second leading cause of death in the United States.
